Urge Congress to Co-Sponsor the Asylum Seeker Work Authorization Act of 2023

Currently asylum seekers have to wait 180 days to apply for employment authorization after the date they file for asylum. This is a huge barrier for asylum seekers not being able to obtain work permits to be able to achieve stability and self-sufficiency. Because of USCIS backlogs, processing time results in asylum seekers waiting even longer for work authorization.

Urge Congress to improve access to employment authorization for asylum seekers, strengthen our immigration system and economy by co-sponsoring the Asylum Seeker Work Authorization Act today!

The Asylum Seeker Work Authorization Act of 2023 (H.R. 1325) will address the ongoing issues of the work authorization process for asylum seekers, alleviate strains in the U.S. immigration system, and support the American economy by:

  • Ensuring access to employment authorization for asylum seekers who are not in immigration detention and whose application has not been deemed frivolous.

  • Allowing asylum seekers to receive work permits following a 30-day waiting period after filing an asylum application.

  • Connecting the asylum-based employment authorization to the duration of the asylum claim, removing the need for unnecessary and business disrupting renewals.

Barriers to accessing employment authorizations for asylum seekers go against our American values of welcoming immigrants with dignity and exacerbate labor shortages.
